11:27 p.m. One of my favourite moments in the history of Western science comes early on in the movie The Blob, when an earnest and curious white boy comes into contact with a meteor freshly arrived from outer space, oozing a luminous, possibly sentient ooze. White boy thinks to himself, "I wonder if that's an alien. How do I determine if this glowing substance is an extraterrestial lifeform or not? I know! I will use 'the scientific method.' I shall taste it!" He tastes it; and, as Jelena would astutely put it, hijinx doth ensue. ("Does it taste like an alien? My word, I think it does! I think I should take another dollop.")
